Have you been putting off your spring cleaning? Better late than never. In fact, now is a good time to collect goods such as old furniture, used clothing, and toys or games. Instead of simply throwing them out, you might donate these items to a local charity. Tax reward: You can claim charitable deduction based on the property's fair-market value at the time of the donation.

However, be aware of new restrictions that apply to donations of property made after August 17, 2006. Under a recent tax law change, you get no deduction unless the items are in "good condition."

To qualify for deductions, make sure that all your contributions are well-documented. Also, explain any special circumstances (e.g., donations of items never used). Remember to obtain receipts of donations from the charity. You will need them as proof when you file your 2007 tax return.

Finally, obtain an independent appraisal for high-priced items. Reason: Under a special exception in the tax law, you may claim a deduction for a single item appraised at more than $500, whether or not it is in good condition.
